Luxury residential building New York

Luxury residential building New York

Brought in to provide the Piet Boon® design philosophy of “simple sophistication” to New York City, we have had the great opportunity to design the transformation of 404 Park Avenue South from a seventeen story office building into a luxury residential building called ‘Huys’ (pronounced ‘house’) offering everything from studios to 4 bedrooms.

Built on a reputation of total design concepts, our work at Huys is no exception. From the exterior design to the interior residential and amenity plans, finishes, and including the public space styling of furniture and accessories we have created a total Piet Boon® design.

Respecting the original architecture, we retain the building’s ornament and bone structure while the windows are enlarged and will be opened out to bring new life to the façade. Continued in the interior, our design allows for light filled interiors emphasizing high ceilings with exposed beams and warm natural finishes.

Corporate building Riverdale

Added: January 01, 2013
Corporate building Riverdale

This month (January 2013) we will start with the construction of the Headquarters and Distribution Center of Riverdale at Nootdorp. The exterior as well as the interior of the building has been designed by Piet Boon®. Through a stepped green gable, which crawls along the building like a Balinese rice field and the horizontal segmenting of the long building, it perfectly meets the requirements of a highly visible prime location. The office which forms one of the five segments of the building has a distinct identity due to the horizontal alternating layers which clearly distinguish the floor, the parapet, and the glass façade.

Photographer Rahi Rezvani

Our front page cover this month was shot by the very talented artist Rahi Rezvani. Rahi Rezvani (1978, Iran) is an Iranian artistic image maker based in The Netherlands. Rezvani’s work is mostly dark and consists of high contrast black and white portraits, filmic still lives and scenic images.

Using both modern and historical photo techniques, Rezvani has created an unique esthetically visual language. With his black eyes and black beard, shy way of speaking, he looks like he is stuck in his own magnificent fantastic mind. The fantasy place where he broods amazing images depicting beauty and framing them with his own emotion and energy.

We are very impressed by his work and we are not the only ones, with a client base know all over the world such as, Willem Dafoe, Ruud van Nistelrooy and …

We recently visited Willowsford in the state Virginia (at a one hour drive from Washington, USA), together with K. Hovnanian Homes. Willowsford, voted “Community of the Year”, is a high end development with a rich history and situated in a remarkable natural landscape. The community has formulated tight regulations for the architecture to guarantee unity between the image and the surrounding landscape.

K. Hovnanian Homes asked Piet Boon® to design two pilot villas fitting within the regulations and combining with the local style, but still are totally Piet Boon’s. Earlier this year Piet Boon® completed a successful project of villas for K. Hovnanian Homes in Arizona.

Jeong Myoung-Jo

Jeong Myoung-Jo

Styling is constantly searching for unique art objects. Art, more than anything else reflects identity and personality, and plays a major role in all our projects.

Jeong Myoung-Jo’s life-size hyperrealist oil portraits immaculately portray Korean women in traditional dress. However, Jeong distinguishes her portraits by uneasily forcing the focal point away from the familiar, the visage, to the back. Though Jeong distinguishes the women through their dress, her deliberate removal of the face and any movement allows viewers to reflect on their own position in time, as characters looking forward, but always bound by the past.

Just like any other month of the year, last month has been busy. Members of our Studio and Styling team have been flying from Asia to the United States and back.

They went to Arizona, where we are involved in the development of 20 residential houses in a gated community in Scottsdale. We are excited that, within a few weeks, we will finish the interior of the model house, entirely designed and styled by our team.

In Taiwan we attended the kick-off of a project in a very special area in Taipei. We have been asked to design and style a penthouse apartment in a five story building that is currently being developed.

After months of work, we styled and delivered an exciting private residence in the center Paris. Also we styled and delivered a Bonaire beach house and re-styled a residence for our upcoming styling book.

Last, but most certainly not least, last week we finalized the re-decoration of the entrance, lounge and restaurant area of Delta Lloyd headquarters. Even closer to the studio, also our project with Amsterdam Arena, home of AFC Ajax, is taking shape.

De Intuïtiefabriek

Ever since they launched their first project ‘Metropolis’, a landscape of tableware, we are a big fan of De Intuïtiefabriek; a collective of four female designers: Amba Molly, Carolina Wilcke, Eefiene Bolhuis and Eva Gevaert.

To them, as it is to us, design is all about craftsmanship; the touch of material and the actual act of making things. It’s their aim to create perfectly crafted products, from which you can feel the love with which they were made. They create a pure, precise and almost fragile feeling, taking the observer into a beautiful new world.

Their latest project, a commissioned piece for Chateau de la Resle in France, concerns a breakfast buffet made of solid oak, coated steel, porcelain and glass.

November was a busy month for both our Studio as Styling team. Some of the Studio team members went to New York and Arizona in order to follow up on the process of our projects there, and some went to Monaco to review a new project.

Piet was invited at the prestigious Trespa Design Center in New York talk for an interested audience. Together with the international acclaimed artist Rachel Hovnanian, who’s work we greatly admire and is part of our art collection, the evening was highly educational and enjoyable.

November 11th, De Dag van de Duurzamheid (Day of Sustainability) Piet Boon signed the Green Deal with Amsterdam ArenA, iconic landmark of the city of Amsterdam and the international sports world. Amsterdam ArenA has developed an ambitious 5-years plan to make the stadium more sustainable. The goal for 2015 is to be CO2 neutral, produce less waste and use less water. To achieve that ArenA signed a Green Deal with 34 partnering organizations who will actively help achieve that goal. Recently Piet Boon signed a contract with Amsterdam ArenA for the interior design of the expansion and renovation of seven floors of the main building of ArenA.

As always our Studio Team members are busy travelling abroad to visit our different projects. December was no exception, and team members went twice to New York for a technical meeting. Other team members went to Denmark, visiting a tab factory near Aarhus, and having an inspiring architectural tour through Copenhagen.

The last meeting abroad in December took place in Londen, having a technical meeting with a client, the local architect, suppliers and the contractor to review plan and status of the building.

Introducing the SAAR table

Added: February 01, 2012
Introducing the SAAR table

To complete the SAAR family we have created the perfect table. The table is a simple 3 piece wooden table, but has a catch. The legs of the table are adjustable. With the legs placed more towards the middle of the table you can sit comfortably at both heads of the table. You can place the legs at the end of the table top creating more seating space along side the table. Or for example in smaller homes you can place on leg at the end of the table top and one leg more towards the middle creating optimal usage of space.

You can choose from a variety of different woods, oak, botane and walnut. This enables you create the perfect combination between table and SAAR chair.

Come to our store for a demonstration, or get in touch with one of our Collection retailers. Want to know more right now? check out our SAAR table product page and download the leaflet.

Introducing the KEKKE table

To complete the KEKKE family we have created a very innovative table. With its curved edges, the table has been designed with social dining in mind, which means that during lovely dinerparties you can hold a conversation with the full table instead of the person sitting next to you. Its sleek steel foot is in chic contrast to its slim top providing a uniquely stylish and luxuriant dining experience.

You can choose from a variety of different materials for the table top, oak, walnut and Magic white or Magic black a specially develloped matt finish. The steel foot is available in black and white this enables you create the perfect combination between table and KEKKE chair.

Fleur Goedendorp

Fleur Goedendorp

One of the art pieces from Dutch artist Fleur Goedendorp's Accessory Collection, has given us great inspiration for one of our styling projects.

Graduated with an Bachelor in Product Design from the ArteZ School of arts in Arnhem, Netherlands, her work has been exposed in both medias as well as in exhibitions; among others "Exhibition 2F2M" with Droog design in Las Vegas, at the Dutch design week in Eindhoven and during Amsterdam International fashion week.

Coming from a product design background, the constructions that she has developed were originally meant for an interior product purpose. But When she then looked closer at the shapes and textures that she had made, she found movement in these constructions, as well then knew how to influence and expand that movement. These newfound volumes began to interact with the volumes of the human body, giving them the look and feel of richness and wealth.

The richness and wealth of these pieces are not to be found in the materials, but in the love and attention for the making process. Therefore the pieces are made out of cheap basic materials like paper, foam rubber and meat rope to emphasize the craftsmanship. Because as Fleur says: 'wealth is craftsmanship'.

All pieces of this collection are inspired by wealth from the golden ages to military costumes and African jewellery. The foam rubber collar on the picture is made out of hand cutted foam rubber bands, knotted together with 884 knots. The collar has been produced while following the shape of the human body.

Each sculpture is made out of one piece of wood, weighing up to 800kg. By turning this old wood into beautiful sculptures, the beauty of the tree will be maintained for ever.

Guy Leclef

Guy Leclef

We are big fans of Guy Leclef.

Essential, original, material, sensible - all the main characteristics of Guy Leclef's work. A genuine artist, constantly searching for the truth, he allows us to discover objects and structures as they really are.

Guy Leclef is obsessed by paper. He aims to give the collages a rhythm, rhythm as building material for a harmonic score. His paper collages are sometimes mannered, but never monotonous and yet it is pure simplicity.

With his book compositions he strives to put order amidst chaos. Adding colors only perpetrates his quest for harmony and peacefulness. As such, his creations will not leave us untouched. Besides being exhibited at our Headquarters, Guy also has exhibitions at RR Interieur, with www.Pas-Partoe.be in Mechelen (Belgium) in October 2011, Ensemble Christian Liaigre in November 2011, F. the Gallery, Delvaux and Pan Am.

A Keen Eye on Kurt Pio

A Keen Eye on Kurt Pio

Our Styling department has got a keen eye on Kurt Pio. Taken in by the beautiful and vibrant botanical paintings he creates.

Kurt Pio specializes in acrylic painting, water color, charcoal and Japanese ink, and over the last six years most of his production has been in the form of commissioned art work from a varied and diverse range of clients such as: Tokyo Sexwale, Cecile&Boyds interior design (for Singita Private game reserves and their showrooms), Keith Design (for Southern Sun, Tsogo Sun and Zimbali Hotels), commissions for local homeware stores like Weylandts and Boardmans and the Anthropologie stores in the U.S.A.

His primary professional area of interest is natural history, mainly indigenous botany. This interest arose from the many hours he spent in his grandfather's garden, and the fascination with the rich diversity of fauna and flora that his home town, the beautiful Cape has to share. He also explores colonialism and the influences it had and still has on design in his country.

Artist Rachel Hovnanian

For many years now we have admired the work of American interactive contemporary artist Rachel Hovnanian. We have given several of her works prominent display at our Global Headquarters, drawn from her successful exhibition "The Power and Burden of Beauty". Exploring concepts of beauty, and the weight of beauty's toll, she renders her work in stark tones of black and white, stripping away the non-essential.

Rachel Hovnanian studied at the University of Texas in Austin where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts. She continued her studies in New York City at Parsons School of Design, The Arts Students League and the National Academy of Design. Her work is exhibited internationally, at Cat Street Gallery, Hong Kong, Aina Nowack, Madrid, Artra in Antwerp and includes work on view at the Manarat Al Saadiyat, AbuDhabi, and is represented by Leila Heller, LTMH Gallery in New York.

Mathieu Nab’s Sculpture in Our Showroom

Mathieu Nab is a renowned Dutch sculptor known for his magnificent sculptures made in marble, wood and stone. Mathieu applied to study art at the State academy of fine arts Amsterdam (Rijksakademie van Beelden Kunsten Amsterdam) where he began his training as a sculptor and graduated from in 1989.

His art pieces have since been exhibited in private and corporate buildings around the globe, including our own showroom at the Piet BoonÆ Global Headquarters in Oostzaan. Vistors to our showroom will be able to enjoy the beautiful "Circulo" sculpture (height 155cm), which captivates the viewer with its soft lines and feminine forms.

Made by azobe wood, a very strong and sturdy wood material that lasts for years, the sculpture can be placed both indoor and outdoor. Mathieu Nab found his inspiration for the "Circulo" sculpture from the beauty of the form and curls of a womanís hair, translating these sensual shapes into the wood. "Art is a way of life, a passion I express my feeling of wonderment and amazement for the beauty of life through my sculptures and wish to awaken it in others. That is my calling as an artist" (quote Mathieu Nab).

Book 3 - Latest Photography

Karin Boon and photographer Richard Powers continue to travel the world to capture the latest private residences and corporate projects designed and styled by Piet Boon®. The photography will soon feature in our upcoming Book 3.

This past month they photographed the spectacular resort model villa in Asia and a beautiful private residence just outside the city of Copenhagen (Denmark).

As reported in May, the model villa is situated in a high-end, ecologically based, private residence golf and ski resort and cosists of 149 luxury villas and apartments, including a museum of the famous Tadao Ando. The photography taken of the sample villa designed by Piet Boon® helps to illustrate the diversity of projects we undertake, as well as the firm foothold we have carved out for ourselves worlwide.

The Danish home is a warm and stylish family house, finished with contemporary and timeless materials, and very recognizable as a Piet Boon interior. The owners bought the neighboring property in order to make a large extension, including a separate swimming pool. After helping them with some exterior adjustments, we also created a completely new interior lay out (changing almost every room except the living area). This project is a prime example of Studio's collaboration with local architects, whereby the client gets the best of both worlds.

As mentioned last month, Richard Powers has been travelling all around the world with our Creative Director, Karin Boon, photographing the latest private residences and corporate projects designed and styled by Piet Boon®.

This past month Richard was shooting here on home-ground, as he photographed a recently completed Woonark and our new Piet Boon® Global Headquarters.

The Woonark is a contemporary, two level, 120m2 boathouse located on a harbour in central Holland. With a minimalist and modern interior fitting of it's surrounding landscape, it contains a master bedroom with dressing area, guestroom, laundry and storage area, large kitchen, and a covered terrace which becomes a living room during the warmer summer months. Basically a houseboat that has everything one could wish for in a home.

Our previously mentioned new Global Headquarters at 'Het Bos' (a 6662m2 office complex designed and styled by Piet Boon® in Oostzaan, Amsterdam Area) was also photographed for the upcoming Piet Boon Book 3. The book which will be launched in September/October this year.

Luckily it was a relatively sunny week for The Netherlands, so we were able to photograph (as always) using only natural light, which allows us to capture the moment as honest and authentic as possible - Typical Piet Boon®.

You can find the collection on the third floor - in the furniture, carpets and flooring section next to the windows facing the Beurs van Berlage building. The presentation has already been a big success. We were glad to see that as soon as the stand went up, the first purchase of the "Herringbone floor" was already made.

Warendorf and Bod’or Showrooms

This month two of our Licensing partners, Warendorf Kitchens and Bod'or Doors, will both open their new showrooms in 'Het Bos'. The showrooms are situated in the same building as our Global Headquarters.

Amongst the product lines exhibited in their showrooms you will be able to find the three kitchen lines designed by Piet Boon®, a selection of our bathroom furniture, new door designs (amongst them, the "New Amsterdam", which are also the selected doors for our new office space), and other related Licensing products such as our door handles and bathroom accessories.

Pink Ribbon

Piet Boon® Collection will participate as contributor at the Pink Ribbon Event taking place June 4th, at Houweling Kunst van 't Wonen at Aphen a/d Rijn. The event has been initiated by Gert de Jeu, owner of Houweling Kunst van 't Wonen at Aphen a/d Rijn in order to fundraise money for breast cancer. For this event Piet Boon® will contribute with three DIEKE loveseats, whereby one of those will be painted live by Piet Boon together with a surprise guest.

For the next three weeks you can bid on one of the DIEKE loveseats, and last weekend in June they will all be sold on an auction to support The Pink Ribbon. Being hand painted by Piet Boon himself, the personal decorated DIEKE loveseat will be very unique and outstanding. Follow next months journal and read everything about how the event went.

Decoration of our canteen

Decoration of our canteen

The back wall in our new canteen at our Global Headquarters has been decorated by the known Dutch Illustrator and Graphic Artist Tiquestar Illuminat Rex alias Maurice  R. van  Zante.

We got familiar with Tiquestars work through advertising completed for Carhartt®, and love his masculine, pure and clean street art design. The wall graffiti decoration he has made in our canteen, is in great line with the aesthetic design of our interior design of the canteen as well as of the rest of our Headquarters. Besides the big graffiti wall decoration, our tables and chair setting are from Piet Hein Eek from his recession serie “Crisis”, and the lighting is from Moooi’s “Dear Inco” serie. The lounge setting is from our own Piet Boon® Collection, the Duko sofa.

We have moved and we are renting out space

It took us 2 days plus an Easter weekend to move into our new Global Headquarters at "Het Bos", but we're settling in and adding the finishing touches to our new facility. As previously shared, the 6662m2 office complex is located in Oostzaan (Amsterdam Area) and designed by Piet Boon®. Construction of the second complex will be finished at the end of the Summer, and we're looking forward to sharing the two complexes with other partners and companies interested in renting or buying space to work alongside us.

There are still some rental offices available in our building and the new complex will be for sale. If you're interested and would like to enquire for more details, then please do not hesitate to contact Paul Silva da Cruz.

New Piet Boon Book 3

The long awaited Piet Boon Book 3 will soon be published – available this Fall, October 2011. We've spent the last 10 months photographing a selection of some of the best residential homes and corporate projects designed and styled by our Piet Boon® Studio and Styling teams. From private homes in Europe and Africa, to a new residential resort in Asia.

Together with our new photographer, Richard Powers, the breathtaking photography captures the true essence of Piet Boon®.

Richard Powers is a world-renowned, self-taught photographer who grew into his career out of a passion for interiors and architecture. Travelling the world with the Piet Boon® team capturing places of beauty has been a unique experience for him, "wherever in the world I shoot a Piet Boon® house I feel instantly at home - their subtle approach to reflecting an owners personality and location is seamless and their attention to detail means I never have to compromise an angle".
